I recently bartered for an antique rifle and pistol. From light research on the net, both are black powder muzzle loaded with the rifle a .50 cal Springfield model unknown circa 1850's and the pistol a .38 cal Springfield model unknown circa 1840's or 1850's. I need help in identifying the actual models, location along with meaning of some identification markings and ultimately a proper description to sell. Sorry for my ignorance and I appreciate any help in my process. I'm not a collector and as such my ultimate goal is to sell these at a fair value to both the seller and buyer. Thanks, Mike
PS - I will attach a few pics of the rifle as a starting point. I was told this is an officers rifle since it is short barreled and has a horse mounting ring along with the strap.
